Kindergarten through Fifth grade has been exploring various kinds of two and three-dimensional art-making this year. In Kindergarten, new characters have come to life through the students’ masks and puppets. The First Graders have been practicing paper sculpture and making their own beaded designs. In Second Grade, we discussed color theory through painting and just started sculpting. The Third and Fourth Graders are delving deep into more advanced sculpting techniques and using new clay tools. The Fifth Graders are sculpting as well and designing original papier-mâché masks. I have particularly enjoyed seeing students apply the techniques from demonstrations, invent their own techniques, and teach each other.

One of my favorite parts of this semester has been watching students hone their skills, build on everything they’ve learned, find their artistic voices, and follow their artistic passions. I am also particularly grateful for the many students who take joy in cleaning and organizing the art materials – at times even offering to do so during recess! Their stewardship makes it possible for us to find and use so many art materials every class. We have such a kind and creative community of artists at Dwight-Englewood; one that continues to inspire me and uplift each other. In the months ahead, we will continue to explore three-dimensional art-making and learn more about printmaking and photography as well.
