“Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” said Vashti’s teacher.

This fall, students in the library participated in a global celebration of Dot Day based on The Dot by Peter Reynolds. The book is about a girl named Vashti who does not think she can draw. With the encouragement of her teacher, Vashti draws a dot and soon realizes she is a fantastic artist. She then goes on to inspire other children to take a risk and try drawing.

Preschool 4 through second grade students in the Lower School listened to the story and then had the chance to make their own mark. Similar to Vashti, preschoolers and kindergarteners experimented with different dots they could make. First graders explored dots found in nature such as those seen on a cheetah or ladybug. Second graders created their own connect the dot pictures. To help bring the book to life, students were asked to sign their work, just like Vashti’s teacher requested. The student’s work is quite dot-tastic!
