Two years ago, when Sammy Cook was a third grader involved in the yearlong Third Graders Making a Difference curriculum, he had an idea for a new project. It came to him one night while lying in bed thinking about his Halloween candy. He knew he would get more candy than he would eat, and he didn’t want the candy to end up in landfills where it could hurt animals. So he thought, “Why not donate the candy to people who can’t trick or treat?!”

And so began our Halloween candy collection for Soldiers’ Angels, an organization that donates the candy to the military and veterans. After the first year, the collection was expanded beyond the third grade to the entire Lower, Middle and Upper School divisions.  Sammy made a speech to each division. The collection has been a huge success with well over 200 pounds of candy collected. Sammy proves as one third grader so eloquently put it, “Even someone young can make a big difference!”
