D-E 360 AfterCare & Enrichment (ACE) Updates
Autumn is officially here, and it’s been an exciting week for our D-E 360 Aftercare programming! Check out what our LS students have been up to—and register for upcoming D-E 360 Discovery Days (spaces are limited).
LEGO Engineering
In Preschool, young engineers read The Digger and the Flower, a story about three big trucks working at a construction site and stumbling upon a flower, and then learned about axles and wheels so they could build their own trucks. Kindergarteners and First Graders learned about coding systems in LEGO Essential to build Ferris wheels. Meanwhile, Second and Third Graders learned about building cars with two motors and using movement blocks to drive the vehicles they made. Our First LEGO League Explore Team is now using the D-E database to conduct research and identify the ocean animals they’d like to build. Fourth and Fifth Graders use proportional reasoning to drive the LEGO driving bases they developed.
The Art of Woodwork
Woodworking is a skill that requires hands-on experience, artistry, mathematics, creativity, and patience. ACE Instructor Glenn introduces these skills, starting with a small project and then building up. For their first project, our students worked on a collapsable puzzle made from popsicle sticks, buttons, and strings. This week, the students started their next project, a balancing board, which they will design and create themselves. Already, we have learned to safely use tools like hot glue guns, drills, and woodcutters.
Shooting Hoops
Coach Starr is back on the court! Here’s a glimpse into our Kindergarten and First Grade basketball class, during which our students practice their dribbling and shooting skills. Fun games such as red light-green light while dribbling, among others, harness the skills kids need for basketball in a fun, stress-free way. Coach Starr understands the importance of interweaving fun with lesson planning, creating a joyous environment for all students.
Naturescape
ACE Instructor Margo teaches our littlest explorers to respect nature and find functionality in every material the earth gives us without waste. Our preschoolers took leaves and other natural materials (rocks, twigs, and more), and used them as paintbrushes! With great pride, our preschoolers created beautiful works of art that were gallery worthy.
