Cross-Curricular Activities in Physical Education: Engaging Children with Persona Dolls and Global
Games

Health and wellness class goes beyond athletic skills; it integrates various subjects through engaging, hands-on activities. Introducing games from multiple cultures enriches physical education and provides lessons in geography, history, and social studies. For instance, basketball has unique variations, such as Netball (England) and Ring Ball/Korfball (Netherlands), which broaden students’ cultural perspectives.

Students enjoy exploring the similarities and differences of various cultural sports and games. It opens up a fascinating window into world traditions and values. Engaging in this comparative analysis enhances their understanding of diverse cultures and fosters a sense of appreciation for the unique characteristics that define each sport. Whether it is the competitive spirit of soccer, teamwork in rugby, or the grace in gymnastics, students relish the opportunity to discuss how these activities reflect the societies from which they originate. This exploration allows them to connect with their peers, share personal experiences, and cultivate a broader worldview, making the learning process both enjoyable and enriching.

This year in kindergarten, we will incorporate Persona Dolls alongside games from the Around the World unit. Persona Dolls represent characters with distinct backgrounds and stories, enabling children to explore diversity and develop social skills through imaginative play. The homeroom teachers share the story of a Persona Doll. A review of the doll’s story is conducted during health and wellness class, which represents the game’s origin and fosters a deeper appreciation for the culture. Students will adopt the persona of the doll during gameplay, encouraging empathy and teamwork. Post-game discussions will help them reflect on their experiences.

Additionally, opportunities for creative expression—such as drawing or writing about their experiences—will enhance literacy and cultural reflection. By integrating Persona Dolls and global games, we create an educational environment that promotes teamwork, empathy, and cultural appreciation, paving the way for a more inclusive future. As we explore these activities, we celebrate each child’s uniqueness and the lessons they learn about the world and themselves.
