These past few weeks in science distance learning, the children in Preschool 3 through First Grade have been learning about clouds and about caring for the Earth (the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 2020).

The children learned how clouds form and also how clouds can predict the weather.  They learned the names of the 3 main types of clouds – cumulus, stratus, and cirrus – and learned the characteristics of each type of cloud.  As well, the students observed a demonstration of an experiment called “Rain Cloud in a Jar.”  Using a food coloring, an eyedropper, and a cup of water with shaving cream on top, the children watched excitedly as a storm formed as colored water was dropped on top of the shaving cream “cloud”.  Some children were able to perform this experiment with their families at home!  How fun!

As well, the children celebrated Earth Day and shared with their classmates why it is so vital for all of us to take care of our Earth.  The students shared thoughtful ideas for keeping our Earth clean and also shared ways in which they are practicing “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.”  Hearing their comments and ideas, it is clear that the future of our Earth is in good hands!
